Fate, is unpredictable....

11 Mar 2011, Friday around 3pm
Massive earthquake hit Japan and followed by deadly tsunami which took away thousands of lives. This is one of the worst disaster recorded in human history (magnitude 8.9, ranked number 6).

My younger brother & his wife actually stayed in Sendai, just 100km from the epicenter. We were so worried because we could not contact him and there is no news from Malaysian Embassy either. At last, on sunday he called us back after spending few days in the evacuation center.

I am still in shock after hearing what my brother had experienced. During the earthquake happens, he was working in the 5th floor University lab. Everything was shaking so much that he were unable to move, its like being in those disaster movies (2012, day after tomorrow). What if the building collapse? What if something fall off from ceiling? Suddenly he is so close to death...

Fate is really a strange thing....
Initially my plan was to attend my brother's convocation in Sendai around this time, but it got cancelled last minute. Lucky for me.

Brother, great to have you back.
And for my friends, I do appreciate all the support and prayers!

The 24-Carrot Manager

Just finish this book, a nice quick read

What I found useful is:
  • Get out of your office regularly, spend some time to walk around, talk to your people, ask them what they are working on and what rewards they value.

  • Take note of potential recognition stories and be specific. If you notice something great, say so immediately and make them feel appreciated. Don't wait until you can offer an employee a raise or promotion

  • Employees attach more value to a reward they find personally meaningful than to a generic gift. Learn about his/her interest, remember birthday & work anniversary and tie recognition to company's goals and values
